Bhola Shankar Movie Review

Meher Ramesh tests his luck and your tolerance in this Telugu remake of the Ajith movie Vedalam. The film, which begins as a popcorn movie, ends up appearing to be a mash-up of three distinct stories. Even worse, none of these stories are amusing; at best, they are all out of date.

Shankar (Chiranjeevi) travels with his sister Mahalakshmi, also known as Maha (Keerthy Suresh), from Hyderabad to Kolkata in order to enroll her in an arts institution. He decides to work as a cab driver to make ends meet and meets criminal defense lawyer Lasya (Tamannaah Bhatia). Shankar and Maha have a love-hate relationship, but Srikar, his brother, is in love with her (Sushanth A).

While Meher is busy making jokes about Lasya, bringing in Brahmanandam and Vennela Kishore to lighten the situation, etc., something much more serious is happening in Kolkata. Young girls are being kidnapped all throughout the city due to corrupt cops, and law enforcement has no idea how to apprehend the mafia.

In the film, Shankar is first introduced as a straightforward individual who looks too good to be true. However, as the film progresses, it becomes obvious that nothing is exactly as it seems. And if you’ve seen any hero-centric Indian movies, you already know how it ends.

It doesn’t help that Meher tries in the first half of the film to strike a balance between being serious, making a joke, and throwing in a duet song for good measure. The film doesn’t fare much better after the intermission though, as the weak writing fails to draw you into the narrative’s main themes—the women who are being trafficked and Shankar’s relationship with Maha—into the story. Only a few scenes at the end of the film slightly outperform the rest.
