Bigil Review

Bigil, one hopes, is a sign of better things to come. Along with Nerkonda Paarvai, it shows the way forward for our biggest stars, the mass heroes. And that is to keep the integrity of the story while playing the lead in material that suits their colorful persona.

In the movie Bigil, Vijay plays Michael Rayappan, a football player who had to give up his sport due to a tragedy caused by the violence in his neighborhood. And he is given the chance to change his life when his friend Kathir (Kathir), the coach of a women’s football team, has critical injuries as a result of the same assault.

All of the players are from the lower socioeconomic strata, so Michael, playing Bigil, must take on the role of coach to help them achieve their goals and, most importantly, the aspirations of his father Rayappan (Vijay again), a do-gooder don who saw athletics as a means of fostering social upliftment.

Bigil starts off a little awkward as director Atlee tries to balance the drama and the popular appeal, but it quickly picks up steam and becomes an engaging entertainer. Some scenes, like the one at the police station, are created with the intention of entertaining the public.

The scenes with Nayanthara, who plays the romantic interest Angel in Bigil’s story, are enjoyable, and the references to other Vijay songs are done tastefully. Vijay excels in these situations, utilizing his swagger and humorous timing to great effect. He partly overcompensates for it in a moving scene that is set in a train station with his portrayal of Rayappan, which includes a surly voice and stammer.

A team in disarray, the new coach receiving the cold shoulder despite his attempts to win their respect, the antagonist (in this case, Jackie Shroff as an upper class businessman named JK Sharma), the on-field drama, and AR Rahman’s anthem are all present in the second half, which feels effortless in contrast to the laborious first. The five female players on the football team are Indhuja, Reba, Amrita, Indraja, and Varsha; each has her moments and succeeds despite having one-dimensional traits. However, the film has the same issue.

Like the director’s earlier efforts, Bigil lacks depth. It is also far too long. The deliberate attempt to turn the film into a story about women’s freedom, however, is successful. Even if the film plays on the masculine rescuer complex, you can’t help but smile when a female character who was attacked with acid receives the loudest cheers.
