Excision Review

Excision is a movie about a high school outcast who goes to great lengths to please her traditional, overbearing mother. Despite being advertised as a horror film and having launched the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival, it is a psychosexual thriller with vivid imagery set against a parody of ordinary teenage angst and desperation. It is a brilliant, thought-provoking, and frightful film.

Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord) is the outcast. Because to her unkempt look, scarred acne, and poor posture, she symbolizes being despised. But she views the idea of being liked with almost complete contempt, much like many other filmic rebels before her. She doesn’t care what people think of her.

Despite Pauline’s desire to pursue a career in medicine, she is anything but a model student. She puts her teachers to the test and competes with her students for her own advantage. She doesn’t have any friends, and the only therapist she sees is the local priest. Given that he is, by definition, a rather repressed person, she blames him for being hypocritical in admitting her moral concerns.

She resides with her close relatives. Roger Bart’s character Dad Bob (who is successful in something) is managed by his wife Phyllis (Traci Lords). Sister Grace is a beloved among the family due to her generosity, sweetness, and kindness as well as the fact that she suffers cystic fibrosis.

Out of all the people she routinely interacts with, Pauline only cares for Grace. She is distraught by her sister’s approaching death, and she also wants her mother to pass away. Perhaps incredibly typical for an adolescent.
